Professor Emerita: Texas A&M University

Susan Kirchman has been exhibiting her art work in museums and galleries since the early 1980's.   Her exhibition record includes the Getty Center in Santa Monica, the University of Houston, The De Jung Museum in San Francisco, the Dallas Museum, the University of Oregon Museum, the University of Iowa Museum, the Lawndale Center in Houston, Louisiana Tech University, Texas Tech University, CameraWorks Gallery in San Francisco, CEPA gallery in NY, the University of the West Indies Barbados, and the Australian Center for Photography. Her art works are in private collections in many states as well as in Barbados, Australia, England, Italy and Germany.

A California native, Susan came to Texas in 1985 to teach at Texas A&M University. While at A&M she was active in the origination of the Master of Science in Visualization Science Degree program in the College of Architecture and served as the first Program Coordinator. She was very active in the international community of electronic artists and presented peer reviewed papers on related subjects in England, the Netherlands and Australia as well as at many venues in the US.

Kirchman taught photography for 20 years at TAMU and received the University Distinguished Achievement in Teaching Award in 2002. She led Study Abroad courses in Italy, Greece, Turkey and Germany.  She received many grants over the years including Teaching Excellence Award Grants, Academy for Advanced Telecommunications and Learning Grants, International Research Grants and a National Science Foundation Grant.

Professor Kirchman retired from TAMU in 2005 and together with her husband Warren Vilmaire, bought a dilapidated building in Johnson City TX which they completely rebuilt to open Kirchman Gallery of Contemporary Fine Art.  The gallery, which is across from the Courthouse Square in Johnson City, specializes in national, international and regional contemporary painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking.

Kirchman and Vilmaire have recently purchased another run down old building in Johnson City and are embarking on another rebuilding project.  They expect to open a second gallery, this one specializing in original jewelry and fine-art glass, in August of 2008. It will be located at 308 E Main Street (Hwy 290 W).  In the meantime, they invite you to Kirchman Gallery to view Susan's work as well as the work of the many wonderful contemporary artists that they represent. www.kirchmangallery.com
