ARTISTS STATEMENT:
The creation of artwork is a constantly evolving activity. I strive to make pieces that are unique and true to my personal aesthetic. Hopefully, these pieces will strike a chord in other individuals and encourage a thoughtful or emotional response.
After living and working in San Francisco for over twenty years, memories of the Hill Country of Texas pulled me back. My wife and I set up a second studio in the country outside of Blanco, TX. Rural life is full of timeless serene beauty as well as violent natural occurrences. It is a stimulating contrast to city life in California.
Metals and glass are the materials I use to create my artwork. These media speak to the strengths and delicacy of life.
Designs made of copper, brass, enamels and kiln-fired paints are enclosed in layers of fused glass like insects trapped in amber. A benefit of working with glass is seeing how the material is affected by different light conditions. Glass has the contrasting properties of being fragile yet extremely resistant to deterioration. This combines well with metals which are strong yet malleable. Metals often provide the structural elements which support the glass in my pieces. I sometimes use historic metal working techniques such as blacksmithing alongside modern methods such as arc welding. At my Texas studio, I’ve also worked with local limestone and woods as artistic materials.
The artwork I create reflects my surroundings and experiences, filtered through my imagination and intuition. From an initial idea, rough sketches move a project closer to completion. Some details are left to be worked out during the construction process. This combination of random spontaneity and conscious effort allows a finished artwork to emerge.
Along with creating art, the public and private exhibition and placement of work is an important component of what I do. This completes the artist to audience communication.
