Eric Krause lived during his formative years in Central Texas. His initial interest in art came from watching his Father paint on black velvet in the mid 60's. He went on to learn to draw and paint but has chosen an earthier material for his art. Eric casts raw cement to create a substrate for his painting-like bas-reliefs. His work is both painting and sculpture. The subtly textured surface of the cement is later stained to mimic the painterly effects one would achieve in a traditional painting medium. These works then become a kind of painting "object" which has the plasticity and physical weight of sculpture. He is currently working on a large scale commission, Cosmic Obelisk for World Peace.
"Great art has presence. With subtle shifts in understanding or a quiet punch to the gut, we are made to question or affirm our certainties. This expression of the inexpressible -- this"Aha" moment -- is what I'm chasing."
